Genetics and Intelligence

月曜日, 2月 13th, 2012

Google Tech Talk (more info below) August 18, 2011 Presented by Steve Hsu. How do genes affect cognitive ability? I begin with a brief review of psychometric measurements of intelligence, introducing the idea of a “general factor” or IQ score. The main results concern the stability, validity (predictive power), and heritability of adult IQ. Next, I discuss ongoing Genome Wide Association Studies which investigate the genetic basis of intelligence. Due mainly to the rapidly decreasing cost of sequencing, it is likely that within the next 5-10 years we will identify genes which account for a significant fraction of total IQ variation. We are currently seeking volunteers for a study of high cognitive ability. Participants will receive free genotyping. Speaker Info: Steve Hsu is Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Oregon and Director of its Institute of Theoretical Science. Educated at Caltech and Berkeley, he was a Harvard Junior Fellow and Assistant Professor at Yale before moving to Oregon in 1998. He is also the founder of two Silicon Valley software startups in the area of information security. He serves as Scientific Advisor to the Cognitive Genomics Lab of BGI (formerly the Beijing Genomics Institute), one of the leading genomics research centers in the world.

Carl Sagan Speaks (Our) Zeitgeist

火曜日, 1月 17th, 2012

From Wikipedia: “Zeitgeist is the general cultural, intellectual, ethical, spiritual, and/or political climate within a nation or even specific groups, along with the general ambiance, morals, sociocultural direction, and mood associated with an era.” The late Carl Sagan (1934-1996) was a hero in the scientific community and a role model for everyone else around the world. Carl Sagan’s’ influences carry today because his words, hence his empirical point of view, seem to be ever more appropriate in our current economic and political climate. The video does not advocate that Carl Sagan supported The Zeitgeist Movement as he passed long before its conception. Rather, using his own words, to simply show how Carl Sagan was in line with the thoughts and direction of this movement that concerns all of human kind. Hubble Update 7 {25th of March 2010}: HST Confirms Existence of Dark Energy

水曜日, 12月 21st, 2011

The basics of the video is simply: scientists use the COSMOS survey to see how the expansion of the Universe affects gravitational lensing, because the expansion is accelerating, lensing is more “efficient” or prominent. Dark energy affects both expansion and lensing therefore proving that it exists in our Universe. 25-Mar-2010: A new study led by European scientists presents the most comprehensive analysis of data from the most ambitious survey ever undertaken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. These researchers have, for the first time ever, used Hubble data to probe the effects of the natural gravitational “weak lenses” in space and characterise the expansion of the Universe. A group of astronomers [1], led by Tim Schrabback of the Leiden Observatory, conducted an intensive study of over 446 000 galaxies within the COSMOS field, the result of the largest survey ever conducted with Hubble. In making the COSMOS survey, Hubble photographed 575 slightly overlapping views of the same part of the Universe using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) onboard Hubble. It took nearly 1000 hours of observations. In addition to the Hubble data, researchers used redshift [2] data from ground-based telescopes to assign distances to 194 000 of the galaxies surveyed (out to a redshift of 5). “The sheer number of galaxies included in this type of analysis is unprecedented, but more important is the wealth of information we could obtain about the invisible structures in the Universe

It is 400 sculptures, exact copies of the coastal inhabitants of the cities of Cancun and Isla Mujeres. The author of the exhibition, including British artist and sculptor Jason Taylor De Caries , got in his work an almost photographic likeness, according to witnesses, the sculptures have the same height as the people who copy and “lifelike.” Jason De Caries Taylor began creating his statement last November, when placed on the bottom of the sea in Cancun his first three sculptures. The project is carried out purely by donations from the people and local companies. The first 100 figures cost him about $ 350000 to the sculptor. ‘The silent evolution’ The exhibition, located at a shallow (about 9 meters), is “quiet evolution” (“The Silent Evolution ‘) and pursues the noble goal of preserving nature, restore the ecosystem destruction suffered by divers. The word ‘evolution’ is used not by chance: the basic material with which the sculptures are constructed of concrete, which has the same rate of pH than seawater. This factor, together with the porous surface of the figures, gives an ideal environment for marine creatures such as, polyps that have a skeleton of lime, jellyfish

TEDxVancouver – Jack Horner – The Shape-Shifting Skulls of Dinosaurs

土曜日, 12月 3rd, 2011

“The Shape-Shifting Skulls of Dinosaurs” will focus on our latest discoveries concerning how dinosaur skulls changed as they grew to adult hood, and why it is that some dinosaur species are actually juvenile growth stages of other species. I will illustrate how it is that scientists got it wrong to begin with, and how we figured it all out. The talk will concern field work, studies in morphology, and osteohistology (the microscopic study of bone) Jack has published more than 170 professional papers, 9 popular books, and more than 100 popular articles. His book Digging Dinosaurs was described by New Scientist Magazine as one of the 250 most important science books of the 20th Century. The COMETA Report

日曜日, 10月 2nd, 2011

COMETA was a high-level French UFO study organisation from the late 1990s, composed of high-ranking officers and officials, some having held command posts in the armed forces and aerospace industry. The name “COMETA” in English stands for “Committee for in-depth studies.” The study was carried out over several years by an independent group of mostly former “auditors” at the Institute of Advanced Studies for National Defence, or IHEDN, a high-level French military think-tank, and by various other experts. The group was responsible for the ‘COMETA Report’ (1999) on UFOs and their possible implications for defence in France. The report concluded that about 5% of the UFO cases they studied were utterly inexplicable and the best hypothesis to explain them was the extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH). The authors also accused the United States government of engaging in a massive cover-up of the evidence. The ‘COMETA Report’ was not solicited by the French government, although before its public release, it was first sent to French President Jacques Chirac and to Prime Minister Lionel Jospin. Immediately afterward, a French weekly news and leisure magazine called VSD referred to it as an “official report”, though technically this wasn’t the case since COMETA was the work of a private, non-profit, ufological study group. Skeptic Claude Maugé wrote about this: “By letter dated 23 February General Bastien, of the Special Staff of the President of the Republic, wrote: ‘To answer your
