The University of Notre Dame has operated a year-long program of study in Austria since 1964. More than 700 students have participated in the program to date, and it remains one of the university’s few year-long foreign-language and culture programs. Under the supervision of a resident, on-site director, the program begins in early September with a month-long intensive language session in Salzburg. Staffed by the prestigious Goethe Institute, the language program refreshes German language skills in anticipation of the upcoming academic year. From Salzburg, students are taken on guided trips to Vienna and other local cities as part of the orientation session.

NSLI for Youth is part of a multi-agency US government initiative launched in January 2006 to improve Americans’ ability to engage with people from around the world. The Department of State, in cooperation with American Councils, AFS-USA, and iEARN-USA awards and administers full merit-based scholarships to high school students for participation in summer, semester, and academic-year language programs in countries where the seven NSLI for Youth languages are spoken. Programs immerse participants in the cultural life of the host country, giving them invaluable formal and informal language practice and sparking a lifetime interest in foreign languages and cultures.
