Each year, thousands of engaged young people from around the world travel to the United States, eager to learn about American life and share perspectives from their own countries. Families who welcome these exchange students into their homes and hearts not only enrich the life of an exceptional young person, they help build people-to-people connections that span the globe and last a lifetime. Host families are essential to the success of international exchange programs. Become a host family: exchanges.state.gov Video Rating: 4 / 5
This is the VOA Special English Health Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http The World Health Organization says the number of cases of tuberculosis has been falling since two thousand six. Also, fewer people are dying from TB. But a study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, says smoking could threaten this progress. Nearly twenty percent of all people use tobacco. The smoke also sickens millions of non-smokers. The new study predicts that smoking will produce an additional thirty-four million TB deaths by twenty-fifty. Efforts to control the spread of tuberculosis have mainly focused on finding and treating infections. Much less effort has been made to understand the causes. Dr. Anthony Fauci is director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He say more than a million people each year die from TB and millions more get infected. “It’s still a very important problem. So we have to do the practical thing and we have to do the fundamental research things at the same time.”Smoking does not cause tuberculosis; bacteria cause the infection. But the study says smoking affects the nervous system in a way that makes an inactive case of TB more likely to develop into an active one. Study co-author Stanton Glantz is director of the University of California’s Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education. He says tobacco use could increase the number of people expected to die from tuberculosis between now and twenty-fifty by …

www.manythings.org Many teachers and students say English can be difficult to learn. It has more words than any other language. The biggest dictionaries contain about six-hundred-thousand words. Many people who come to the United States from foreign countries have already studied English. They may have done very well. But when they arrive here, they may not understand much of what they hear or read. English learned in classrooms sometimes seems very different from everyday spoken English. Studies show that it can take several years of living in the United States while studying English for a foreign person to speak the language well. Examining almost 5000 cases, Muttart analyses these Supreme Court decisions employing several important criteria including whether the decisions overruled prior precedent, the extent to which they we
